The Institute for Local Government and the Statewide Energy Efficiency Collaborative honored the City of National City with a gold level Beacon Spotlight Award for the city’s efforts to adopt policies and programs that promote sustainability. The award was presented on October 1st during the 2015 League of California Cities Annual Conference in San Jose. The city’s achievements were recognized as a part of its participation in the sustainability recognition program, the Beacon Program.
“The Beacon Program assists local governments in adopting sustainability programs that make sense within the unique circumstances of each community,” said Martin Gonzalez, Director, Institute for Local Government. “The City of National City has done just that by conserving resources and creating a better place to work, live and play for its residents.”
National City has implemented numerous initiatives in sustainability best practices areas ranging from community design to efficient transportation. A few highlights of these include:
Adopting several Property Assessed Clean Energy (PACE) programs to help homeowners save energy, water and money;
Using recycled materials in its city parks; and
Securing grant funding for a new transit-orientated, infill, affordable-housing project.
“National City has remolded itself to be at the forefront of sustainability,” adds Ron Morrison, Mayor, City of National City. “From; recycling, energy programs, heavy transit use, transit oriented housing, alternative transportation and pilot run off water diversion projects, National City is looking to a cleaner and greener future.”
